The story
Giaquinto: family weaving in Salento
Tessitura Giaquinto has woven linen and cotton in Gagliano del Capo since 1923. The workshop is in the heart of Puglia’s Salento. The family makes household textiles from table linens to beach towels. Every step, from weaving to tailoring, happens in their own laboratory.
A century of family weaving
The story started with Grandma Francesca in the 1930s. She went to Como to buy the first loom. This laid the foundation for the project. Today Cosimo maintains the historic shuttle looms. Antonietta designs original Jacquard patterns. Francesco and Katiuscia oversee production and commercial activities. The workshop still uses late 19th-century machinery. It also uses antique Jacquard cards and wooden shuttles. Each fabric carries the memory of its origins.
Materials and craftsmanship
Giaquinto uses natural yarns, mainly linen and cotton. The fabrics are for the home, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. The Jacquard technique weaves decorative patterns into the fabric. It does not apply prints to the surface. Each piece goes through yarn preparation, warping, weaving and manual inspection. The whole process, from thread to finished product, is done in-house in Salento.
Preserving tradition in practice
The workshop offers guided tours. Visitors can see the looms, warping machines and the hands-on process. The family’s commitment to shuttle looms allows a slow, controlled weaving rhythm. This is deeply tied to the quality of the final textiles. Every item is hand-checked, cut, sewn and finished with the same care as a century ago.
